When most people order custom apparel, they ask one question:
"Should I go with DTF or screen printing?"
The answer isn't as simple as one being "better" than the other.
At Manateez, we use both because each method shines in different situations. Choosing the right print method can save you money, improve the look of your design, and make sure your apparel lasts exactly as long as you expect it to.
Let's break it down.
What is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct to Film) printing is one of the newest technologies in custom apparel.
Your artwork is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat pressed onto the garment.
Think of it as creating a high quality transfer that's permanently bonded to the fabric.
DTF is great for:
- Small orders (even just one shirt)
- Full color artwork
- Photographs and gradients
- Complex logos with lots of detail
- Names and numbers
- Printing on cotton, polyester, blends, performance fabrics, and more
One of the biggest advantages of DTF is flexibility. Whether your design has two colors or two hundred, the printing cost is generally the same.
What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing has been the gold standard for decades.
Instead of printing directly from a file, each color in your artwork gets its own screen. Ink is pushed through those screens directly onto the garment.
It's a more involved setup process, but once everything is ready, it becomes incredibly efficient for large production runs.
Screen printing is great for:
- Large quantity orders
- Bold, simple graphics
- Corporate apparel
- School spirit wear
- Event shirts
- Merchandise that needs maximum durability
If you've ever owned a favorite concert shirt that still looks great years later, there's a good chance it was screen printed.
Which One Looks Better?
Honestly? Both can look fantastic.
DTF produces crisp detail, vibrant colors, and handles photographic artwork with ease.
Screen printing creates a classic printed feel with rich, solid colors that become part of the garment.
The better question isn't which looks better.
It's which method is better for your design.
Which Lasts Longer?
Both methods are made to last when produced correctly.
Screen printing has earned its reputation for incredible longevity over decades of use.
Modern DTF technology has come a long way and delivers excellent wash durability when applied with the proper equipment and curing process.
Following the garment's care instructions will help either print method look great for years.
Which Costs Less?
It depends on quantity.
DTF usually makes more sense when:
- You need a handful of shirts
- Every shirt has different names or artwork
- Your design contains lots of colors
- You need something quickly
Screen printing usually makes more sense when:
- You're ordering dozens or hundreds of shirts
- Everyone is getting the same design
- The artwork uses only a few colors
Because screen printing requires setup for each color, larger orders spread that setup cost across more garments, making each shirt less expensive.
Our Recommendation
We don't believe in forcing every order into one printing method.
If DTF is the better option, we'll recommend DTF.
If screen printing will save you money or produce a better result, we'll recommend screen printing.
Our goal isn't to sell you a specific process.
It's to make sure you end up with apparel you're proud to wear.
